RUNNER'S KNEE?

Causes, treatments & tips

RUNNER'S KNEE – SUDDEN KNEE PAIN WHILE RUNNING

Everything was going smoothly just a moment ago – and suddenly you feel a sharp pain on the outside of your knee. Runner’s knee is not unusual; it’s one of the most common running injuries. The good news is: once you know the cause, you can take targeted steps to overcome it.

HOW DOES RUNNER'S KNEE DEVELOP?

Runner's knee (ITBS) is a typical sign of overload – it affects a fascial band on the outside of the knee known as the tractus iliotibialis.

The symptoms are usually not caused by a single factor, but rather by a combination of several factors: increasing training intensity too quickly, unfamiliar stress on the body, inefficient running technique or muscular weakness. External factors such as hard or sloped surfaces, as well as unsuitable running shoes, can further increase the strain.

The result: forces are not optimally distributed when the foot strikes the ground, leading to increased tensile and compressive stresses in the knee – and this is precisely what can trigger the typical pain on the outside of the knee.

WHAT HELPS – FOR ACUTE AND LONG-TERM RELIEF?

For acute symptoms, rest is key: taking a break from running, applying cold therapy, and performing targeted stretching exercises and fascia training (e.g., with a foam roller) can reduce tension in the tissues and ease pain.

In the long term, it is important to identify and address the individual causes. Depending on the initial situation, different measures may be appropriate: for example, improving running technique and targeted strength training – especially for the muscles of the hips and the outer thighs. Choosing the right running shoes is also important to prevent non-physiological stress from occurring in the first place.

WHAT ROLE DO RUNNING SHOES PLAY?

Running shoes are a crucial factor. What many people don't realize is that they influence how forces act on your knees while running.

This is exactly where True Motion's biomechanical approach comes in: Our patented U-TECH™ technology centers the foot when it strikes the ground and automatically brings it into a natural, stable position. This reduces harmful leverage forces – and has been proven to lower the risk of running injuries by up to 50%.

The result is a unique trampoline effect: soft, dynamic, and stabilizing at the same time. Forces are evenly distributed and centered from the foot to the hip – which can make a noticeable difference, especially in the sensitive area of the knee.

SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN:

UP TO 50% FEWER RUNNING INJURIES

An independent study of 1,700 runners conducted by the German Sport University Cologne has shown that True Motion running shoes reduce the risk of running injuries by up to 50% – across all running styles. The patented U-TECH™ Technology reduces injuries on the knee, Achilles tendon, shin and back.

“MY GOAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO REDUCE RUNNING INJURIES”

– Prof. Dr. Gert-Peter Brüggemann

After 25 years of joint research in the running shoe industry, we founded True Motion. “My goal has always been to reduce the risk of running injuries,” says our co-founder Prof. Dr. Gert-Peter Brüggemann. The reason: Still million of runners get injured at least once a year.
