SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPIST AND RUNNER:

“YOU DETERMINE YOURSELF HOW MUCH THE JOB WEIGHS ON YOUR BODY”

For Paulina Kohlhaas, a normal workday starts early in the morning; many of her patients have to go straight to work after treatment. The sports physiotherapist works freelance in a physiotherapy practice. Here, the 26-year-old treats athletes who are recovering from an injury, are in recovery training, or need stabilization training. As different as the people she deals with on a daily basis are, so are their injuries. “Every day I see new medical conditions, treatment methods are constantly changing – you never stop learning in physical therapy,” she says. A portrait of a sports physiotherapist who combines her greatest hobby – sports – with her profession, while traveling the world with her boyfriend.

Paulina Kohlhaas stands next to the treatment bench, reaches around her patient’s lower left leg, and strokes it with slow movements over and over again in the direction of her upper body. The knee bends and stretches in the process. The sports physiotherapist is treating a torn cruciate ligament first thing this morning. “After cruciate ligament surgery, the first thing is to restore mobility in the knee. That’s what we’re working on three times a week at the moment,“ the 26-year-old tells us.

She has turned her hobby into a profession by working as a sports physiotherapist. “I came to this great profession through sports, more specifically tennis,“ she says. “It has always been my dream to work in the sports field.“ Paulina is fascinated by how the body works as a whole – and how people can be impacted through holistic physical therapy.

In Paulina’s job, no two days are the same. Almost every hour, a wide variety of people come to the practice with as many of stories and medical conditions. “No matter what problem, what injury someone has, there is no better feeling than helping people and making sure they are no longer in pain,“ Paulina says. “The positive feedback often stays with me long after the treatment.“

As a sports physiotherapist, however, Paulina doesn’t just work in the practice. Rather, she travels the world. Professionally and privately, with her partner Ruben Zepuntke. Ruben is a professional triathlete, and the world is his home. Training camps, preparations, and competitions – Paulina is there whenever she can. “Through my job, I can support Ruben and make my contribution to his athletic success,“ she says.

During her daily practice routine, Paulina almost never sits. “Together with my patients I do the workouts, sports sessions, personal training,“ she says. And when Paulina is not training herself, she treats her patients on the treatment bench with various techniques. The constant movement, the many ups and downs during work are what she loves about her job.

GET RELIEF

WHENEVER YOU NEED IT

“I’m active all day – comfortable, healthy shoes are very important,“ says sports physiotherapist Paulina Kohlhaas. Thanks to patented U-TECH™ technology, the U-TECH White Nevos reduces stress on the knee and Achilles tendon by up to 10% – and ensures less muscle fatigue. Whenever you’re on your feet a lot. With so much exercise during work, the right shoes also play a crucial role. It’s only logical that Paulina has “a particularly critical eye when it comes to shoes just because of my profession,“ she says. And smiles. Above all, she pays attention to natural stability and a good footbed.

“I want to be a role model for my patients,“ the therapist says, “because how can I give advice if I don’t follow it myself?“

It’s not just about the shoes for Paulina, though. To her, it’s important to be fit herself. On the one hand, exercising is a counterbalance to everyday life – but at the same time it is also the basis for the stability and fitness she needs in her job. “It’s mainly through my training that I stay fit and can cope with the stresses and strains of my job.“

In the evening after work, Paulina continues her exercise routine – by grabbing her running shoes and taking a trip into nature. This helps her escape the city after a busy day and clear her head. “Running is a great way for me – besides the athletic aspect – to meet friends or spend time with Ruben,“ she says. In everyday life, there is usually little room for social events. “And that makes running a win-win situation for me, so to speak,“ she explains. “I can practice my hobby and spend time with people who are important to me.“ And thus feel reinvigorated for a new day in the practice.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT:

SCIENTIFICALLY VALIDATED TECHNOLOGIES

Almost 100 % of our technology is derived from scientific findings and biomechanical research. Prof. Dr. Gert-Peter Brüggemann, head of the Institute for Biomechanics and Orthopedics at the German Sports University Cologne for decades, is largely responsible for this. Over the past 25 years, he has been part of numerous innovative running shoe developments – and thus a sought-after expert among the giants of the industry.
